New exhibition at Turner's House: 'Turner's English Coasts'

Turner‘s House Trust is delighted to announce its second exhibition of original works of art by J.M.W. Turner. The exhibition comprises eleven Turner watercolours and engravings, painted at a time when Turner was at his most popular and commercially successful.

Turner’s English Coasts focuses on Turner’s engagement with English marine and coastal subjects at a pivotal time in his career when he was living at Sandycombe Lodge, the house he designed and lived in between 1813 to 1826, at Sandycoombe Road, St Margarets, Twickenham TW1 2LR.

Guest-curator Christine Riding has deliberately selected works which underline the close relationship between Turner’s images of maritime Britain and contemporary print culture. The exhibition includes projects financed by professional engravers and publishers to those instigated by Turner himself. Some were commercially successful (the finished watercolours in the exhibition were and still are highly desirable to art collectors), while others were personal experiments. Crucially, it was through such projects – unprecedented in their breadth and quality – that Turner was to achieve an international reputation.

Turner’s House Trust are grateful to the Tate for the loan of these paintings.

      Adult Printmaking Workshop

      Tuesday 25th May – 10:00am – 1:00pm – Ticket £50 – BOOK HERE

Join Local artist Sasa Marinkov exploring Monoprint techniques to recreate the spirit of some of Turner’s landscapes and interiors. We will use his works as inspiration and our own sketches and photographs of Thames river scenery anywhere from Hammersmith to Twickenham. Turner’s Thames studies inspired some of his great Liber Studiorum prints.

Depending on the current Government guidance, we may meet initially at Turner’s House to draw the interior, before making our prints.

The workshop will be held at the near ETNA centre where all current safety measures will be in place. All material will be provided, along with refreshments.

Face coverings will be provided if needed, as well as hand sanitiser. All the material needed for the session will be packed individually for each participant.

Places are limited. Booking is essential. BOOK HERE.

Sasa Marinkov lives in Twickenham near the River Thames. She studied Fine Art at Leeds University and Postgraduate Printmaking at Central School of Art and Design. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers (RE).

      Behind Marble Hill's closed doors

Marble Hill House shut in late 2019 and will re-open in spring 2022.

The long closure will be well worth it. The Friends of Marble Hill will host a free talk from English Heritage on Thursday May 27th from 6-7 pm to give you a glimpse behind closed doors as they update you on progress and share the significant changes in public access, and reinterpretation of the House, that they will deliver.
