Seamsters: After School Sewing Club

Wurkshop

14 January 2022 - 25 March 2022
16:20

Seamsters is an after school club with a difference. Kids will learn how to cut their own patterns and sew their clothes with experienced clothing designer Lynn Hiller.

Lynn has worked for John Rocha and Jasper Conran and now loves to teach young people how to sew. With more and more concern about fast fashion, its impact on the environment and our waste, making clothes is the way forward. Students will learn how to operate a sewing machine, hand sew and embroider. They can choose their own projects throughout the term.

This new club starts on Friday 14th January at 4.20-5.20pm and is a ten week term (with a one week break for half term on 18th February). It is held at Wurkshop, 46-52 Church Road Mews, Barnes, SW13 0DQ.

Painting in the Style of Basquiat

14 February 2022 -

Paint in the Style of Basquiat

with artist Hayley Steedman

Monday 14th February 10am-12.30pm

£55

Inspired by Basquiat’s paintings, we’ll use paint and oil pastel to create our own paintings, which will use the bold colours, scribbles and graffiti motifs Basquiat is famous for.

Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to fame in the late 1970s through his street art in Lower East Side Manhattan. By the 1980s his work was being displayed in top galleries across the world. In 2017, he set a record for the most expensive painting by an American artist when a piece of his art sold for $110.5 million. His work was highly influenced by the early hip-hop scene in New York, as well as bebop, no wave, and jazz, so this class will be playing an appropriate soundtrack to inspire our budding artists.

If you enjoy graffiti and would like to try something a little different... this is a great cross over class, seeing graffiti step into the realm of fine art.

Banksy Stencils

Wurkshop

14 February 2022 -

Banksy Stencils

Mark Cockram (aka Marsky)

Monday 14th February, 1-3pm

Our very own 'Banksy of Barnes' will be showing students how to create powerful, dynamic stencil art using graffiti spray cans and cut-stencils. Students will design their own piece, from the theme of flowers for Valentine.

Will they make their message one of love and peace or subvert the message to make a political or societal point? It's up to each lucky student to decide.

The finished stencil artworks will be sprayed onto wooden boards, so that students are able to take their pieces away to be displayed at home or in a gallery!

As students will be using acrylic spay paint, we recommend that they don't bring their best shoes and clothes, as drips do happen and they are incredibly difficult to get out.

Manga: Write & Illustrate a Comic

Wurkshop

16 February 2022 -
10:00

Illustration and Cartooning Course

Practicioner: Irina Richards

Wednesday 16th February | 10am-3pm

We’re really excited to bring you this new course with manga artist Irina Richards.

You will decide the theme of your comic and learn how to create your own characters with Irina Richards. Manga can encompass historical fiction, super hero action comedy, or even romance. There are key styles of writing your story which Irina can help you perfect.

Next step is manga illustration. Manga artists have specific techniques for drawing facial features, poses and bodies and Irina will specially guide you through them all. You will learn about how to make your character’s hair defy gravity, proper anime style! Or how to replicate those famous anime facial expressions.

Did you know that when a snot bubble is coming out of someone’s nose, they’re asleep? Or if a character dies, temporarily, and turns into a ghost, it means they’re embarrassed. How to tell your story through these illustration styles and much more.

These comics can also include collage, as they often do in Japan. Irina will bring a range of materials you can use to enhance your comic and learn collage techniques you can replicate at home.

After this full day’s course you will have improved your cartooning skills and learnt many completely new ones.

Irina says of her art - ‘my aim is to involve, inspire and empower others through creating comics and manga’.

All materials are provided. For our full day’s courses please bring your own packed lunch.

Jackson Pollock Drip Paintings

Wurkshop

17 February 2022 -
14:30

Thursday 17th February | 2:30pm-4:30pm

Jackson Pollock’s paintings were made by throwing, splashing and dripping paint from household tubs onto large canvases laid out on the floor. Exciting, dynamic and very, very messy… this is definitely a painting style most parents do not want their kids trying at home!

We will be setting up a fully protected plastic room for this class, so that you can try his eccentric painting style yourself.

Artist, Hayley Steedman, will introduce you to Jackson Pollock’s work in detail. You will learn about his painting style, other artists working at the time and look at individual paintings to see how he built up layers of paint and colour. Then, we will experiment with various techniques before putting on a dynamic music soundtrack for you to ‘paint’ your own piece using what you have learnt.

By the end of the class, each student will have a piece on canvas to take home.

Improvisational Patchwork Cushions

Wurkshop

24 February 2022 -
18:45

Sewing and stitching course

Thursday 24th February | 6:45pm to 9:45pm

We’re really excited to host textile artist Lauren MacDonald for this new course. Lauren’s studio Working Cloth draws its inspiration from "historical design movements and an innate respect for those who came before" to make stunning homewares full of style and texture.

In this three hour course, students will be taught the art of improvisational patchwork - a fun and relaxing way to piece together fabrics without a pattern.

Students will use this technique to create a cushion with an envelope back closure. You will learn string piecing, two methods of finishing your seams, and many patchwork tips and tricks to make the most of your scrap fabric.

As we’re all becoming more aware of waste, this is a perfect way to use scraps of material you have lying around at home, or old clothes you love but no longer wear. Bring them along to create your cushion. Mid-weight, woven fabrics are easiest for beginners to work with (but also, don’t let this put you off if you don’t have anything - we will provide plenty of material).

Students will go home with an item to be proud of on any bed or sofa and a skill that can be replicated on other pieces.

If you’d like to bring your own sewing machine, just let us know when booking.
