Throughout his life, the great landscape painter J.M.W. Turner absorbed poetry from the classics to the work of poets of his own time, and strove to write poetry himself. This online talk will look at the way Turner used an abundant source of inspiration, and his deep understanding of the way that writers create pictures with words, to which he responded by creating visual poetry. In his own words ‘painting and poetry reflect each other’s beauties’.

Join us for a talk about Jonathan and Alice Peel, who lived at Marble Hill for over sixty years during the nineteenth century and who occupy a significant but little-known place in the history of the house. Between 1825 and 1887, Marble Hill served not only as an important social space for entertaining the Peels’ many distinguished guests but also as a vibrant family home for the couple and their eight children. Situated on the edge of an expanding London, a train ride away from the heart of the bustling Victorian capital, Marble Hill was a key location for a family involved with nineteenth-century politics both in Britain and abroad.

This is a free online talk. Please book below to receive the zoom link.
