    The Ideas Exchange

St Mary’s are delighted to launch the first of three “Ideas Exchange” events this academic year.  The Ideas Exchange is a series of quick-fire lectures from a range of top academics. Each thought-provoking talk is only eight minutes long (or short) and will usually cover a wealth of topics from media, politics and history to sport, emotions and science!  This event however is a special football takeover. The line-up will include a diverse panel of guest speakers from different coaching and sport science backgrounds within the football industry. The purpose of the day will be to problematise some of the contemporary issues and trends within the game and offer collaborative solutions to inform practice.

    In the Gallery: Russell Terry

An alumnus of the Royal College of Art, Russell Terry works within drawing, painting, printing, casting, and collage, often utilising hand-cut paper. The results reveal compulsive inclinations towards pattern, sequence, systems, combinatronics and cataloguing, always in the great corrupting shadows of infinity. Russell comments “Everything declared finished is really a punctuation mark or a breathing space in a potentially endless sentence in a potentially endless book in a potentially endless library. Like this condensed statement, everything is forever a work-in-progress.”

An Exhibition of New Paintings by John Potter

John’s new work is a response to his local environment - the natural habitats and industrial surroundings of a small section of the River Thames in Isleworth where he lives and works. Working with a combination of observation, memory and invention, he creates bold, colourful images which lie between landscape and abstraction.

Each day, the artist walks along the Thames observing the changes in the riverscape - the daily ebb and flow of the tides and play of light upon the surface of the water; seasonal changes of colour and light; the slowly rusting, fading boats laying across the river in the boatyard, as their hulls are exposed at low tide. A constantly changing colour palette is revealed and created by the constant movement of the tides.

The resulting paintings develop out of this experience but, rather than being direct representations of physical reality, they attempt to create dream-like spaces, hinting at what lies beyond or beneath the surface. The viewer is encouraged to let their eyes roam across the painting, moving through its different layers and levels rather than fixing on a single focal point or meaning.

The exhibition is open 7 – 15 September 2019, with a private view on Friday 6 September.

    Spirit

Spirit, by Sue Beattie, takes the audience on a captivating journey of ordinary people’s otherworldly experiences. The puppetry moves from delicate marionette to table top and from object theatre to shadows. The visuals of the show are constructed around the voices of real people relating personal stories and contemplating life and living. Their reflections and narratives are humorous, inspiring and in some cases deeply moving.

    Running time: 1hr including interval

    Suitable for adults.
