Lord Hurd has been Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary. Well known as a writer of such political thrillers as The Shape of Ice (1998) Image in the Water (2001), he has also written his own memoirs, an acclaimed biography of Peel and most recently, with Edward Young, the fascinating and elegant Choose Your Weapons: The British Foreign Secretary: Two Centuries of Conflict and Personalities (2010).

Gavin Esler, an author and award winning journalist, is currently a presenter on the BBC news and current affairs programme, Newsnight and a former BBC Chief North America correspondent.

Besides his vivid depiction of the U.S.A in The United States of Anger: People and the American Dream he has also written five novels. Power Play, his latest is a spectacular thriller in which the US Vice President goes missing on British soil threatening the “special relationship. (This is politics on both sides of the Atlantic, served up with élan, cynicism and style’ Daily Mail.).

Anne Sebba is a biographer, journalist and former Reuters foreign correspondent. She has written eight books and is currently working on a biography of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor.

New Writing Competition

artsrichmond will be staging a ONE-DAY Drama Festival for New Writing at the Orange Tree Theatre on the last Sunday in March 2011

Groups wanting to take part should return the entry form (at the bottom of this page) indicating their interest as soon as possible.
Groups may perform a play that has been written within their group, or may perform an unpublished play written by an outside playwright; so if your group is interested in performing an unknown play, please indicate this.

The competition rules are:
1. Play to be unpublished
2. Length of play should be MAX. 20 minutes
3. Play must be suitable to be performed “in the round”
4. The play should be designed to need MINIMAL SET requirements
5. The play should be for no more than 12 performers
6. Plays must include spoken dialogue and a written script must be submitted to the adjudicator.

All participating groups will awarded a certificate as a record of their performance at the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond. The overall winner, as decided by our panel of judges, will be presented with the Roy Purdue Trophy (which can be held for two years and will be inscribed) and the opportunity to participate in a Writing Workshop at the Soho Theatre.
